Till the mid seventies there were limited options in the field of secondary education in Nickerie.
Since then the situation has improved considerably and Nickerie now offers nearly all types of education.
This has brought an end to the exodus of youth to Paramaribo.


St. Alphonsius school is where I learned to read and write



In those days the boys were strictly seperated from the girls
of St. Clara school by a high brick wall;
at present both schools have mixed population
and there is a gate in the wall



Many generations grew up with these textbooks
