Nickerie is an agriculture district, with very high productivity and for a long time it has been contributing considerably to the national development of Suriname.
It is the main provider of rice for the domestic as well for the export market.
A major part of the banana export also comes from Nickerie.
Other important sources of income are timber exploitation and fishing.

The presence of the "Landbouwbank" in an agricultaral district is logical;
but all other banks have branches in Nickerie too

Nickerie has five radio stations and three tv stations

In the good old days Nickerie had five cinemas; Juliana, Volks, Roshni, Bernhard and Prakash.
Due to the several curfews imposed during the military regime in the 80's, as well as the advent of the home video, all cinemas (throughout Suriname) had to close eventually.
