Nickerie is the Mecca of Suriname's most popular songbirds twatwa (oryzoborus crassirostris) and picolet (oryzoborus angolensis).
Keeping songbirds is therefore a popular hobby among (male) citizens of Nickerie.
On early sunday mornings contests are held between these birds.
A champion calibre twa twa is worth up to US$ 10,000.00.
