Life in Nickerie is heavily influenced by neighbouring (British)
Guyana.
This is obvious in different areas; architecture, language,
names, music,
sports (For a long time Nickerie has had the only cricket league in Suriname).
Some examples of names which were "imported" via Guyana
are: Bourne, Coats, Craig, Crawford, Critchlow, Griffith, Hollingsworth,
and Romeo.

Example of Guyanese influence; according to the Oxford Dictionary the phrase is:
"Every smile is not a smile of happiness"
